Being connected to a community is important. For adults, it provides not only a social network of other adults who have something in common with you, but it also provides measures of safety, security, and others to help watch over your house and vehicles when you’re out of town. For children, community is even more important. Studies show that children who grow up engaged in their communities are more likely to stay in school, take care of property (their own as well as others’ and community) and find a greater number of quality adult role models to pattern their own behavior after.
How can you engage in your community?
There are several ways to get involved. If you’re religious, join a local church and become actively involved in the philanthropic events that church holds. Most churches focus on benefitting members of their own community and are often regarded as an anchor in their neighborhood.
Attend local events like community plays, farmers markets, craft shows, bake sales, etc. The money you spend will benefit entrepeneurs that live near you.
Join a community-based organization like the YMCA. While most people associate the YMCA with working out and fitness, it’s actually the largest non-profit organization in the country and provides all types of community-based events and efforts like job training, childcare, swim lessons, free health screenings, and more.
Lastly, host a block party or holiday gathering and invite your neighbors. This way, you’re giving everyone an opportunity to get to know the people who live nearby and make connections that will benefit everyone.
