Drafting Tables for the Student

Posted on Saturday 21 January 2006

Drafting tables aren’t just found in architecture firms and graphic design departments. A large percentage of the market purchasing drafting tables happens to be educational institutions from high schools, to universities, to technical colleges. Like all furniture used in an educational environment, drafting tables must be extremely durable and easily adjustable. Because a classroom environment implies that furnishings will be utilized by multiple users of different heights several times each day, the height-adjustment system is important. It must be easy to use and resist slipping or sticking. Multiple users can also mean less “ownership of the furniture” by each individual, paving the way for graffiti or less effort in preventing scratches, chips, or stains. Drafting tables in these environments should be ultra-durable with chip-resistant coating and a thick laminate on all writing surfaces.

Drafting tables for the student should be designed differently than a drafting table for the professional would be. Students have different needs and these differences should be reflected in the design chosen. Administrators charged with the responsibility of purchasing drafting tables for classrooms should identify those needs and communicate with the furniture manufacturer openly about those needs to ensure that the furniture chosen will not only serve its purpose well, but last for years to come.
